Audio, video and ICT equipment safety

Audio, video and ICT equipment safety concerns the relationship between energy sources, users and protective design. IEC 62368-1 is a product safety reference whose application needs the actual equipment configuration and market context.

Scope and technical question

An ICT product can combine mains power, batteries, communication circuits and accessible surfaces in one enclosure. Its safety evidence needs to relate the design to the people who use or service it and the conditions under which energy can cause harm. IEC 62368-1 is a product safety reference for audio, video and information and communication technology equipment. It does not make every aspect of a connected product’s performance, privacy or radio-frequency compliance part of one universal safety approval.

Reference and publication context

The safety approach connects sources of potential harm with protective measures and the conditions in which those measures are relied upon. That logic is different from treating a list of approved components as a complete product assessment. The IEC bibliographic record identifies the selected document and edition. This reference does not reproduce its energy classifications, detailed safeguards or tests. The actual design, users, installation and national basis determine the evidence set needed for an evaluation.

Editions and related documents

The selected catalogue record is IEC 62368-1:2023, Edition 4.0, publication date 26 May 2023; its record also identifies a corrected version dated August 2025. These are bibliographic facts, not a finding that every scheme or jurisdiction has adopted that edition. A correction, amendment and national adoption need their own source records before their effect on an existing report is assessed. The selected official records were checked on 19 October 2026; source access identifies the publications and their roles in this reference.

Application in organizations

A network device supplied with several external power units illustrates the configuration issue. The unit used in a test, its ratings and its interface with the device need to be identifiable. A different adapter, enclosure or battery can change the relevance of earlier evidence. The product file connects the bill of materials and design revisions to the tested sample. A declaration that each component has a certificate cannot by itself explain their interactions, the accessible parts or the conditions under which the complete equipment is intended to operate.

Adoption and regulatory context

U.S. radio-frequency obligations under 47 CFR Part 15 address a different regulatory subject from electrical product safety. An FCC equipment authorization is not a general safety certificate, and an IEC safety report is not radio authorization. Workplace listing or other product requirements may form additional layers depending on use. A national adoption of IEC 62368-1 also needs its own edition and differences record; the international publication year alone does not establish acceptance in every market.

Evidence and assessment questions

Check the product’s function, supply arrangements, accessible interfaces, installation and intended users. Which hardware and software versions were evaluated? Are optional accessories and power sources included? Does the evidence identify the international or national standard and the relevant edition, amendments and corrections? Where certification is claimed, verify the product listing rather than only a laboratory report. For a connected product, keep safety, radio, cybersecurity and performance records distinguishable so that a favorable result in one area is not used to close another.

Research findings and limits

The value of this reference is the separation of protective-design evidence from unrelated approvals and marketing claims. A suitable component can support a design without establishing the safety of every assembled configuration. Likewise, publication status does not determine the transition policy of every scheme. This page provides original evidence questions and selected metadata, not a substitute for the standard’s requirements or a determination that an individual product satisfies a regulator, purchaser or certification body.

Related research and reading

Use electromagnetic compatibility for emissions and immunity questions, and portable battery safety when rechargeable cells or batteries are part of the product. Product certification bodies explains listing scope and mark authorization. Read these alongside the finished equipment definition: a power supply certificate, radio authorization and battery report each contribute evidence but do not replace evaluation of the complete product and its intended use.

Official sources, access and corrections

Official sources and selected bibliographic facts were checked on 19 October 2026. Only publication identifiers, edition and date are taken from the IEC catalogue. Complete requirements, corrections and applicable national documents remain available through authorized publisher channels. Public access is not treated as permission to republish third-party material. The examples and evidence questions are original NCQM analysis. Send a correction request with the reference, statement and official evidence so that the issue can be reviewed.
