Center for International Standards Research

Center introduction

The Center for International Standards Research is a research center within the National Committee for Quality Management, a nonprofit organization. It examines how standards are developed, adopted and applied across sectors and jurisdictions.

The Center connects technical references, comparative research and the practical questions that arise in quality management: which document to use, which edition matters, what an assessment establishes, and where further evidence is needed.

Standards in context

Begin with the question you need to answer. A technical reference explains a document family and its application context. An organization profile explains the source and its role. A comparative study examines a defined relationship, such as the difference between a new standard edition and the edition cited by a regulation.

These routes share the same sources and terminology, so readers can move from an overview to the evidence behind it.

Research subjects

Research subjects connect standards with decisions in quality management, engineering, procurement and technical review. Each subject brings together a selected reference set, relevant comparisons and practical reading steps.

The collection covers organizational systems, conformity assessment, health-related products, food, consumer goods, electrical equipment, industrial systems, materials, transport, digital technologies, environmental practice and energy management.

Selected standards & technical references

A reference profile identifies a standard family or technical document, its publication context and the questions it raises in practice. Publication status, national adoption and regulatory use are treated separately.

Use the profiles to establish a reliable reading route, then consult the issuing organization's catalogue or the controlling regulatory text for the original document and its conditions of use.

Management system standard

Quality management systems

ISO 9000 / ISO 9001

Read ISO 9000 and ISO 9001 together, distinguish system certification from product evidence, and track editions against regulatory references.

Read the reference

Transport test provision

Lithium battery transport tests

UN Manual of Tests and Criteria, subsection 38.3

Connect UN 38.3 type testing, test summaries and PHMSA transport conditions without treating the test report as universal product approval.

Comparative studies

Comparative studies address questions that cannot be settled by a standard number alone. They examine document types, edition control, national adoption, conformity assessment and the evidence needed to support a technical conclusion.

Each study states its question, comparison objects and source basis. Findings are presented with their application limits and links to the relevant reference profiles.

International reference and market application

An international reference can enter practice through national adoption, regulation, a contract or a defined assessment scheme. Each route has its own scope and edition controls.

Follow the relationship from the original technical reference to the document that gives it a particular use. The U.S. collection provides a separate route into federal requirements, agency guidance and technical programs for product-specific review.

  1. 01Technical reference

    Document, part and edition

  2. 02Adoption & use

    Country, regulation or scheme

  3. 03Application

    Product, activity and scope

  4. 04Evidence

    Method, result and decision

Trace each relationship to its source. A shared subject or designation does not establish equivalence.

Reading pathways

Reading pathways organize the collection around six common tasks. They help readers distinguish document types, assemble a product reference set, review supplier evidence, examine a source-based research question or connect a standard with market requirements.

Each pathway identifies the information to collect and the record to prepare. It ends with a defined next step rather than a general assertion of compliance.

Research method & sources

Source selection, document classification and edition control are part of the research method. The Center distinguishes original analysis from publisher material and records when sources were checked.

Official catalogues, permitted open metadata, adopted documents and regulatory sources support the collection. The method also explains attribution, access to original publications and how readers can request a correction.

Research enquiries

A focused enquiry identifies the product, process or organizational activity; the technical question; and the jurisdictions concerned. Include the document designation and edition when available.

Research contributions should also explain their methods, sources and intended professional use. Enquiries and manuscripts follow the Committee's established contact and research submission routes.
