United Kingdom: Requirements and Standards

Research on defined product requirements and the use of standards in the United Kingdom. Each record identifies its scope, source and practical evidence questions.

Market scope

Great Britain and Northern Ireland are distinct product-law scopes.

The records below examine specific provisions and standards relationships. They do not combine different products or regulatory roles into one approval route.

Requirements at a glance

  1. Place only safe products on the Great Britain market Regulation 5(1)-(4)
  2. Keep electrical-equipment documentation available for ten years Regulation 7
  3. Check that radio equipment can operate within spectrum requirements Regulation 8, Great Britain version
  4. Notify the enforcement authority of an unsafe supplied product Regulation 9(1)-(4), Great Britain version
  5. Register the relevant general medical device before Great Britain placement Regulation 7A(1)-(2A)
  6. Draw up the construction-product declaration of performance when triggered Article 4(1)-(3), UK-amended text

Standards and their use

These records distinguish adoption, legal incorporation, designation and programme recognition. A standard’s use is assessed within the specific relationship recorded.

Great Britain designates the EN 62368-1:2014 ICT safety reference

Low voltage designated standards notice 0120/25 · Annex I complete list, entry 557

The government notice lists EN 62368-1:2014 with AC:2015. Its effect follows the Great Britain designation mechanism, so a report citing a newer IEC edition needs a separate assessment of how it supports the legal safety objectives. The market and complete reference must be identified together.

Great Britain lists EN ISO 12100 as an A-type machinery reference

Machinery designated standards notice 0139/26 · Annex I Part 2, A-type standards

The current notice identifies EN ISO 12100:2010 and explains the limited role of A-type standards. The reference supports the general risk-assessment and design framework, but equipment-specific hazards and detailed essential requirements must still be addressed.

The Great Britain glove reference includes the 2024 European amendment

PPE designated standards notice 0142/26 · Annex I complete list, entry 200

The official notice lists EN ISO 21420:2020 with A1:2024. A generic ISO 21420 citation omitting the European amendment is not the same identifier. The designated relationship concerns covered requirements and must be combined with the glove’s intended protection and applicable assessment route.

Great Britain’s device list identifies an EN ISO 13485 package

Medical-device designated standards notice 0129/26 · Annex I, entry 126

The 2026 government notice identifies the medical-device QMS reference and its European amendments. Its use is tied to the UK regulatory route and the requirements addressed by the designation. The same standard family can therefore appear in different markets without the legal effects becoming interchangeable.
