Risk management standard
Machinery risk assessment
ISO 12100
Read ISO 12100 with machinery boundaries, lifecycle tasks, risk reduction and U.S. machine guarding context.
Read the referenceReading pathway
A reading route for identifying the technical reference set needed to evaluate a defined product, configuration and market.
Use this pathway when selecting references for a new design, evaluating a modified product or reviewing an existing technical file. Choose a defined product and configuration. Include intended users, functions, energy sources, accessories and environment. The reading result should help the responsible engineering team identify relevant technical families and evidence gaps. It should not begin from a competitor's certificate list or assume that one familiar standard covers every function.
Write the intended decision: selecting a design basis, commissioning tests, comparing a national adoption or accepting supplier evidence. Record model boundaries, variants and markets. Separate product characteristics from organizational management requirements. Include foreseeable modes that could change the reference set, such as charging, maintenance, software functions or installation. These facts provide the basis for evaluating whether a proposed reference fits the actual object rather than an approximate product category.
Read the study on standards, regulations and guidance. Locate the rule, contract or programme selecting each reference, then identify the official publisher. OSHA's NRTL programme illustrates one specific assessment route for certain electrical products; it does not apply automatically to every engineering question. Keep market obligations separate from the technical design sources so the product file explains both why a reference was chosen and how it is used.
Use machinery risk assessment, household appliance safety and portable battery safety as starting examples, choosing only those relevant to the defined product. Find the general requirements and product-specific parts needed for the actual application. Where a battery or component is integrated, examine the documented conditions of use. A component report and complete-equipment evaluation address different objects. Obtain authorized technical publications before relying on detailed design or test provisions.
Follow the IEC national application study when the proposed report, declaration and required adoption use different designations. Record each edition, amendments and documented correspondence. Build a source register and connect references with the actual design or test evidence. PHMSA's battery resources provide a separate transport route where battery shipping is involved. Do not combine product safety and transport evidence into one unqualified battery approval claim.
Check whether the set addresses the functions and conditions recorded at the start. Identify omitted or unresolved hazards, configuration differences and unsupported assumptions. Confirm that the reports concern the product or documented variants actually supplied. The result should distinguish technical relevance, test coverage and acceptance under the receiving programme. These are related conclusions, yet one should not be inferred solely from another or from the presence of a familiar mark.
Continue to the supplier evidence route for external reports and the cross-market route for differing regulatory selections. A technical enquiry should include the product description, markets, references and exact discrepancy. Preserve the engineering decision and responsible owner. Design, materials, software, power supply, accessories or intended-use changes can affect earlier assumptions and should be considered through the appropriate technical change process before old evidence is reused.
