Tensile properties describe how a defined plastic specimen responds to a controlled load. ISO 527 results support material selection and comparison when preparation, conditioning and test conditions are properly identified.
An ISO 527 result concerns a particular specimen under defined conditions. Tensile strength, modulus and the stress–strain response can help characterize material behaviour, but they are not interchangeable measures. The technical question starts with the material form and the decision being made: qualifying a resin, comparing production lots or supplying input to a design analysis. A short-duration specimen result alone cannot establish the durability of a moulded assembly under every service load, temperature and environmental exposure.
The licensed scope in ISO Open Data distinguishes the general principles in Part 1 from the test conditions for moulding and extrusion plastics in Part 2. It also identifies exclusions and other material forms covered elsewhere. This distinction matters when a data sheet combines values from different specimen types. A method family is not a universal material specification, and the publication itself does not assign a pass level to every grade or intended product.
Selected records: ISO 527-1:2019 (edition 3, publication record 2019-07-26); ISO 527-2:2025 (edition 3, publication record 2025-06-18). The selected parts have different publication years. Part 1 supplies general principles; Part 2 addresses moulding and extrusion plastics. Thin films, textile-fibre-reinforced composites and cellular materials need appropriate method selection rather than an assumption that Part 2 covers every plastic form. The separate legal example below retains a much older designated edition. The records were checked on 19 October 2026 in ISO Open Data.
Consider a purchaser comparing two injection-moulded material grades. The comparison needs a common basis for specimen preparation, conditioning, dimensions, test speed and reported property. A value taken from a supplier’s general data sheet may have been measured on a prepared specimen rather than a sample cut from the delivered part. Processing history and specimen orientation belong in the evidence record. The purchasing decision can then separate a material screening result from the additional work needed to qualify the actual component.
A specific U.S. example appears in 46 CFR 160.135-5(e)(1): the Coast Guard identifies ISO 527-1:1993(E) for the referenced lifeboat provisions. That is a limited incorporation, not adoption of all ISO 527 publications or automatic substitution of a newer edition. The applicable equipment provision determines how the reference is used. The difference between a current catalogue selection and a legally designated older document must remain visible in the technical file.
Does the report identify the precise part and edition, the material batch and the preparation route? Are dimensions, conditioning and loading conditions recorded sufficiently to interpret the result? Which property is reported, and how were unusual failures or excluded specimens handled? Can the purchaser connect the specimens to the material or component being supplied? Where a specification sets acceptance criteria, those criteria need a separate source. A numerical strength value with no traceable method conditions is a weak basis for a close comparison.
The useful finding is a controlled relationship between material, specimen, method and result. Agreement on the family name does not demonstrate that two values are comparable. Nor does a good tensile result establish resistance to impact, creep, fatigue, chemicals or fire. This overview uses licensed public scope information and an explicit legal reference; it does not reproduce the test procedure, choose specimen dimensions or calculate design allowables. Those tasks require the actual application and the complete authorized document set.
Measurement uncertainty explains the interpretation of measured values; testing and calibration laboratories addresses laboratory competence and scope. Editions and regulatory adoption develops the difference illustrated by the Coast Guard reference. Read these together when a supplier offers material data against a familiar family name but the purchase specification names a particular part, edition and specimen preparation route.
Official sources and bibliographic records were checked on 19 October 2026. The laboratory method must be obtained through an authorized source. The eCFR example identifies a particular legal reference without reproducing its incorporated technical text. ISO metadata is attributed to the iso_deliverables_metadata dataset under ODC-By 1.0. The explanation and examples are original NCQM analysis. Send a correction request identifying the reference, disputed statement and official supporting evidence.
The entries below identify the publications examined. Catalogue status, regulatory adoption and scheme acceptance are separate questions.
