Biological evaluation asks whether body contact with a medical device can produce an unacceptable biological response. The ISO 10993 family addresses different parts of that evaluation, including the device’s materials and chemical constituents.
Biological safety is evaluated for a device in a contact scenario, not for a material name in isolation. The nature and duration of contact, the finished configuration and the effects of processing can matter to the response. ISO 10993 addresses biological evaluation within a risk management context. Its different parts concern different evidence, including chemical characterization and particular biological endpoints. A reference to the series is therefore a starting point for selecting relevant documents, not a complete test specification.
Part 1 provides the evaluation framework, while other parts address more specific subjects. The licensed scope information for Part 18 describes chemical characterization, including construction materials, constituents introduced during manufacture, extractables and substances released under clinical use conditions. These are related but different evidence questions. A supplier’s material declaration may help identify constituents without describing the finished device after processing. The selected document identities and scope context come from ISO Open Data.
Selected records are ISO 10993-18:2020 (edition 2, published 13 January 2020) and ISO 10993-1:2025 (edition 6, published 18 November 2025), verified in ISO Open Data. Different parts address different evaluation tasks. FDA recognition 2-313 identifies the sixth edition with specific exclusions, while its transition provision separately addresses the older 2018 recognition. The document set should therefore identify both the international publication and the regulatory acceptance basis used for a submission. The source records were checked on 19 October 2026.
Consider a device with an established polymer that receives a new coating and sterilization process. The base polymer’s prior history does not automatically describe the new finished device. An evaluation can connect the formulation, contact surface, processing residues and proposed use with the existing evidence and any additional investigation. The test article then needs a documented relationship to the product patients or users will contact. Otherwise, even a well-executed test may concern a configuration that does not represent the marketed device.
FDA recognition 2-313 identifies ISO 10993-1:2025 with partial recognition: the phrase concerning consumer products in clause 6.5.11.3 and clause 6.9 on biological risk estimation are excluded. The same sheet accepts declarations of conformity to the superseded 2018 recognition, 2-258, in support of premarket submissions until 1 July 2029. This is a defined transition, not a requirement to repeat every biological test. The device pathway, recognized scope and applicable guidance still determine how the evidence is used; publication of a new ISO edition and FDA recognition are distinct events.
Identify all relevant body-contacting components and the finished device state being evaluated. What evidence describes composition, surface treatment, manufacturing aids and sterilization? How do extraction or test conditions relate to the question being examined? Are existing data applicable to the same material, processing and contact conditions? Can the evaluator explain why an endpoint is addressed by testing, chemical information or other evidence? These questions focus the assessment on a defensible biological argument rather than the size of a test package.
The public sources support a risk-based, configuration-specific reading of biological evidence. They do not establish that a substance is safe in every device or that passing one biological test demonstrates complete biocompatibility. A material change can affect the relevance of earlier evidence without necessarily requiring every test to be repeated. This reference provides a map of those decisions. Selecting methods, interpreting toxicological evidence and determining regulatory sufficiency require qualified evaluation of the actual device and its intended contact.
Start with medical device risk management, then connect the evaluation to medical device quality for changes in materials, processing and suppliers. Testing and calibration laboratories supports review of the laboratory evidence. The test evidence assessment helps organize questions about a test article and its relationship to the finished device without selecting a biological test plan automatically.

FDA’s resource pages explain assessment concepts and point to its guidance. The official recognition database remains necessary for any claim about recognition of a particular ISO 10993 part and edition. Use authorized publisher channels for the complete document. A correction request can identify the reference, disputed statement and supporting official source.
