Part 18 addresses equipment that uses radiofrequency energy for industrial, scientific, medical, domestic or similar purposes within its defined scope. It is not a general standard for every industrial or medical product. Equipment classification, consumer or nonconsumer status and RF function affect the authorization route. Wireless power products can require Part 15, Part 18 or a combined assessment according to their operation.
The Part 18 analysis begins with the equipment's purpose and the way it generates and uses RF energy. Local heating, processing or another covered application differs from a communications transmitter. A product's industry label does not decide the classification. For equipment combining energy transfer with data communication, examine each function rather than assigning the whole product to Part 18 solely because it transfers power.
Section 18.203 distinguishes consumer ISM equipment, certain consumer ultrasonic equipment and nonconsumer equipment, with applicable exceptions elsewhere in the rule. Certification and Supplier's Declaration of Conformity are different pathways. Use the current category provisions and Part 2 procedures before marketing or use where required. A commercial test certificate should not be described as an FCC grant when the product follows the declaration procedure.
Part 18 addresses operating frequencies and emissions within and outside the relevant ISM frequency bands, together with measurement provisions. Equipment type and operating conditions affect the technical assessment. Preserve the tested load, accessories and modes so the result can be connected to the product's actual operation. A single nominal measurement may not represent conditions that change RF generation or unwanted emissions.
The rule describes technical report information when required, including equipment identity, operating parameters, measurement details and instructions. Product identification and compliance information depend on the applicable authorization procedure. Keep the report connected to the marketed construction. Instructions should communicate relevant installation and operating conditions, especially where placement, loads or associated equipment influence emissions and the user's ability to operate the device within its evaluated configuration.
Part 18 equipment is also subject to applicable RF exposure provisions. Meeting an emission limit does not automatically resolve human-exposure compliance. The rule also addresses harmful interference and associated investigation or corrective responsibilities. A product file should distinguish interference-control measurements from the exposure assessment, since they concern different effects and can require different operating assumptions and evidence.
Changes to coils, power stages, shielding, control software or intended loads can affect the assessment. Wireless power equipment warrants particular attention to current FCC guidance on classification and authorization. Maintain a controlled record of the chosen rule pathway and supporting construction. Part 18 conformity does not substitute for electrical safety, medical-device requirements or another authority's product obligations simply because those products also use radiofrequency energy.
