Measurement, standards and technical guidance

National Institute of Standards and Technology

NIST provides measurement services, technical publications, standards resources and defined accreditation programs. These functions do not make NIST a general product certification authority.

Read the source in its own scope

National Institute of Standards and Technology is represented in this collection through the specific publications listed below. Begin with the product, activity and responsible party identified by the source. A reference to an agency does not establish that every product in an industry follows the same pathway. Scope, definitions, exceptions and the status of an adopted technical document can change the conclusion.

Connect the publication to the product decision

Use the original publication to establish the requirement, then connect it to the actual model, configuration, process or transaction. Keep source dates separate from effective and compliance dates. Where several agencies are relevant, preserve a distinct conclusion for each framework. A test report, registration, approval, certification and voluntary program claim should be assessed for the precise object and conditions they cover.

Laboratory Accreditation Under NVLAP

National Voluntary Laboratory Accreditation Program; 15 CFR Part 285

NVLAP assesses laboratories against applicable competence and program requirements. Accreditation is expressed through a defined scope of testing or calibration. When reviewing a report, the laboratory name and accreditation mark are starting points; the relevant method, service, location and scope must be connected to the work on which the product decision relies.

Metrological Traceability and Measurement Evidence

NIST Policy on Metrological Traceability

Measurement evidence depends on more than an instrument’s calibration label. NIST explains traceability as the relationship of a measurement result to a reference through a documented chain of calibrations, with contributions to uncertainty. The result must also be suitable for the decision being made; traceability alone does not establish adequate accuracy for a particular product requirement.

Secure Software Development Framework

NIST SP 800-218, SSDF Version 1.1

The Secure Software Development Framework provides practices for integrating security into software development. SP 800-218, Version 1.1, is identified here by its final publication designation. Organizations can use the framework to organize responsibilities, protect development assets, produce well-secured software and respond to vulnerabilities, while assessing any procurement obligations through the applicable contract or program.

Weighing and Measuring Device Requirements

NIST Handbook 44, 2026 edition

NIST Handbook 44 provides specifications, tolerances and technical requirements for weighing and measuring devices. The 2026 edition is a technical reference for commercial measurement. Practical application depends on the device category and the edition or provisions adopted by the responsible jurisdiction, making adoption status an essential part of a device requirements review.
