Occupational research and respirator approval

National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health

NIOSH conducts occupational safety research and administers a defined respirator approval program. Approval applies to specified respirator configurations and conditions, alongside separate employer duties for selection and use.

Read the source in its own scope

National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health is represented in this collection through the specific publications listed below. Begin with the product, activity and responsible party identified by the source. A reference to an agency does not establish that every product in an industry follows the same pathway. Scope, definitions, exceptions and the status of an adopted technical document can change the conclusion.

Connect the publication to the product decision

Use the original publication to establish the requirement, then connect it to the actual model, configuration, process or transaction. Keep source dates separate from effective and compliance dates. Where several agencies are relevant, preserve a distinct conclusion for each framework. A test report, registration, approval, certification and voluntary program claim should be assessed for the precise object and conditions they cover.

Coal Mine Dust Sampling Device Approval

30 CFR Part 74, including Subparts C and D

Part 74 establishes design, performance, testing and approval requirements for coal mine dust sampling devices. Continuous personal dust monitors provide within-shift and end-of-shift measurements, while other sampler units follow a distinct technical pathway. The approval process involves MSHA and NIOSH. An approved instrument supports exposure measurement; it does not by itself establish that a mine's dust-control program or sampling practice complies with all applicable rules.

NIOSH Respirator Approval and Verification

42 CFR Part 84; workplace use requirements separately under 29 CFR 1910.134

NIOSH approves respiratory protective devices under a performance and quality assurance framework. Approval belongs to a defined respirator configuration and can be checked through the Certified Equipment List. It does not establish that a respirator is suitable for every contaminant or exposure. Workplace selection, medical evaluation, fit testing and use remain separate obligations under the applicable respiratory protection requirements.
